I attended yesterday with my husband and daughter. The place was packed with people and exhibits. Although there wasn’t much for our daughter to do, many of the exhibitors were kid friendly. They had candy at their tables, allowed children to play games to win prizes, and included children in their conversations. There was a huge slide from Jumpy King that kept my daughter entertained for a while. She even asked to go back a few more times. A clown who made animal balloons walked through the crowd and Sammi was allowed to sit in the boats, feel the water in the spa’s, get free popcorn (a few times), and try out the various products there.

My husband and I had a few specific things in mind that we wanted to look for at the Florida’s Largest Home Show.

• Bathtubs and Shower Remodeling- Our favorite exhibitor was ReBath of Tampa Bay, who took the time to go over some suggestions that we hadn’t even though about.
• Artificial Lawn – We’re sick of seeing our beautiful lawn turn into weeds, paying for water to keep it growing and a lawn service to maintain it. We spoke with Michael Johnson of Sport Court, who designs and Forever Lawns. His company also designs putting greens. We looked at some of his completed work and again got some new ideas for our landscaping.
• Home Furnishings – There were lots of exhibitors who had home furnishings, but our hands down favorite was World of Decor. We just looked though!

We sat in on the second demonstration of the day with Brain Santos, The Wall Wizard, to learn about Faux Finish Tips.

We met up with local non-profits including Habitat For Humanity, Wheels for Success, Treats 4 Troops and Lyrics For Life. There’s something special about meeting the people who put their time and effort into these groups.

I came across Martin Schwartz on Facebook. He is involved with local fundraising for the MDA and other nonprofits. His blog, Give So They Can Live, features all of his efforts. Since I am a patient of the MDA clinic in Tampa and featured them as one of my nonprofits of the month recently, I’m happy to share this information with my readers.

The MDA does so much in the area of muscular dystrophy diseases. They help families, provide treatment, are involved with cutting edge research and share information to patients, medical personnel and the public. Warriors For Autism was founded by 5x World Champion Kickboxer Olando “The Warrior” Rivera and his wife Deena Rivera. Their son, Anthony, was diagnosed at the age of 2 with Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD-nos), one of the many conditions on the Autism Spectrum.

The money raised by Warriors helps local children and families with items not covered by insurance and other needs they may have. In the past, money was sent to a larger organization, but now “Money raised here helps here right on the home front.”

Along with the Warriors For Autism Facebook page and website, their events help raise awareness by bringing local businesses and other local organizations together to be sure the word gets out! They work with martial arts groups and both large and small businesses.

During events information is provided to promote awareness.  At this Saturday’s, April 16th, Walk Now For Autism Speaks – Warriors for Autism and Team BBQ, held at Al Lopez Park, 4810 N Himes Ave in Tampa, information will be provided for those that attend and passers-by at the BBQ.

Families are always welcome to attend events or to reach out to the organization for education and support. Many events are just for families. Many involve resource booths with Olanda and Deena Rivera attending or other members who can provide information. The website has a guestbook where you can leave your information. Someone from the group will get in touch with you to answer questions, provide you with local resources, etc.

For the second consecutive year, more than 800 McDonald’s restaurants across the state of Florida will provide a free breakfast to students on the first day of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Local students in grades 3 through 11 will receive a complimentary Egg McMuffin®, Apple Dippers and a low-fat milk or orange juice at any participating McDonald’s location on Monday, April 11 between 6 and 9am.*

“Whether students eat at home, at their school or at McDonald’s, it’s important to have a well-balanced breakfast every morning” said Cindy Goody, PhD, the Senior Director of Nutrition for McDonald’s USA. Dr. Goody, a registered and licensed dietitian, says a wholesome breakfast that includes food groups like fruit, whole grains and low-fat milk or lean protein helps children meet daily nutritional needs, while providing much-needed energy to start the day.

As local business leaders and parents themselves, McDonald’s 120 Florida franchise owners are committed to contributing to the well-being of children in their communities. In 2010, more than 190,000 students across the state – including over 40,000 in the greater Tampa Bay area alone – enjoyed a free McDonald’s breakfast prior to taking the FCAT on March 9.

If parents are unable to bring their children to McDonald’s, many local schools also serve free breakfast throughout the week of testing. For more information, parents are encouraged to check with their local school districts.
