“We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” DVD and Adventure Field Guide Home School Review

One of my 8 year old’s favorite books is the bedtime story book We’re Going On A Bear Huntso when given the opportunity to review a copy of the animated We’re Going On A Bear Hunt DVD and companion book, I couldn’t say no. My children were introduced to the animation a few weeks ago. I was putting together a unit study featuring We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and I just happened to discover the animated story on Amazon Prime. It was a great addition to our lesson plans, and the girls have watched the story many times since!

We’re Going on A Bear Hunt: An Adventure Field Guide

I also received a copy of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: An Adventure Field Guide to review, and honestly, the book is my favorite part of the package. As soon as I opened the book it was obvious this is a great addition to our homeschool library! Over the last week, we have included the book into Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, and Science! We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: An Adventure Field Guide (affiliate link) is currently available on Amazon for $9.99.

While We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: An Adventure Field Guide is based on the original characters, it is so much more than just a storybook. The book is a guide to creating your own adventure, and it is very educational! The book is broken into sections with different tips and facts about the surroundings when exploring outdoors.

The book is filled with facts, activities, and recipes broken down by subject. When learning about worms, you will find instructions to build your own worm farm alongside a mountain of information about worms themselves. Study birds by learning the basic features of all birds (a really great resource when learning about vertebrates and invertebrates), learn about eggs and migration patterns, and finish the lesson with an activity to make a cake for a bird!

Both of my kids are obsessed with rocks and have a huge rock collection. So, today we learned all about rocks and fossils.

The Life on the River section teaches food chains, river residents, and the life cycle of a frog. These are all science lessons my 8 year old is studying this year, and the information is presented in a fun and interesting way.

My favorite part of the book is the glossary. I know, it’s probably my daughter’s least favorite section, but it is such a great reference for terms she may not know when reading through the book. I am currently using this section as part of our weekly vocabulary lesson. I can easily pick out words that go with the science subject she is studying and present her with a definition written on her level.

If you are a homeschooling family there are a few great companion books from Candlewick Press that are perfect to include in your lesson plans. We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: My Explorer’s Journal and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: An Adventure Field Guide were both published in Fall 2017. We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: Let’s Discover Bugs is due to release in May 2018! These Candlewick Press releases feature artwork from the DVD and work well in conjunction with the DVD.
