Easy DIY Homemade Hot Cocoa Gift Set with Recipe

As an Oriental Trading Ambassador I received product to facilitate this post.

When it’s cold outside, there is nothing I love more than a good cup of hot cocoa. It’s a staple in our household in the Winter months…year round if my kids have their way! It’s so easy to make my 8-year-old can make a batch herself and the ingredients are budget friendly. Homemade hot cocoa mix also lacks many of the processed ingredients you find in store-bought mixes such as hydrogenated oils, and I think it tastes so much yummier!

Homemade hot cocoa mix is also one of my favorite DIY gifts to give for the holidays. I don’t have a single friend or family member who doesn’t love hot cocoa. It’s so easy to divide a batch of mix into cut jars, and with the addition of a cup you have a cute little gift set!

This year the girls are gifting our homemade hot cocoa mix gift sets to family and friends. We are personalizing each set to match a favorite color, theme, or kitchen scheme for each person. As I usually do, I picked up most of our supplies from Oriental Trading. There are so many cute Christmas items that can be compiled into a gift set.

I found cute wooden trays and glass milk bottles in the Christmas craft and hobby supplies. I immediately knew they would both be perfect for our hot cocoa gift sets! Decorate, add a mug, and fill the bottle with a homemade hot cocoa mix to make a complete set! We painted the trays then decorated each item with holiday and winter-themed sayings and images. I used my silhouette cameo to cut them, and the girls helped me decorate. You could also hand paint or stencil paint the trays.

I also found adorable “Legend of the Hot Chocolate” ornaments on Oriental Trading that I think make the perfect addition to each gift set.

I showed Ellie how to wrap each tray in cellophane, and I think she did a pretty awesome job for an eight-year-old.

They may not be the prettiest gift sets you have ever seen, but they are made with love. That’s what really matters around here!
Want to make your own homemade hot cocoa mix? It’s super easy and only requires a few ingredients to make!

Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1¼ cups Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 cups Powdered Milk
  1. Sift ingredients into bowl and mix until well blended. Store in air tight container. We use a 1 to 1 ratios of mix and boiling water to reconstitute into hot cocoa. Adjust to your own flavor preferences.
