Once upon a time I knew a very special woman, Missy. She was one of the kindest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. She always had a smile on her face, a genuinely beautiful soul, and was ready to help anyone in need.
This special lady also carried a very dark secret. Missy’s home life was clouded by domestic violence. On February 13, 2009, Missy’s secret was exposed when her husband murdered her in a fit of rage. This sweet beautiful woman battled cancer and won, but she lost the battle with domestic violence. Now her oldest son is raising his little brother, both parents lost that night. They must now visit their mother graveside while their father lives out the rest of his life in jail.
Sadly, Missy’s story isn’t unique. Domestic violence occurs across our nation everyday, ripping families apart, damaging innocent children, and unfortunately taking lives.
Domestic Violence Facts:
- 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.[iii]
- Men are the victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults in the U.S. [iii]
- On a typical day, more than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. [ii]
- More than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes each year. [iii]
Domestic violence doesn’t just effect a certain group of people. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. Domestic violence doesn’t see race or gender. It is a national problem that impacts all communities, neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members. More than likely you know someone who is dealing with domestic violence right now or who has been a victim of domestic violence in the past.
HopeLine® from Verizon provides non-profits domestic violence organizations and agencies that are committed to connecting victims and survivors to vital resources with financial support to help meet those goals. Verizon has a longstanding commitment to domestic violence awareness and prevention programs, and has made this a focus since 2001 through HopeLine.
What is Verizon’s HopeLine® Program?
Through the HopeLine program, Verizon donates wireless phones (with minutes and text messaging) to domestic violence shelters and non-profit organizations to be used by victims and survivors. HopeLine phones provide a private line of communication between survivors, family, friends, and employers. Through the HopeLine program, Verizon has donated millions of dollars, numerous resources, and more than 190,000 phones for domestic violence prevention and awareness. For more information visit Verizon’s HopeLine Program.
How can you support HopeLine?
If you would like to get involved to help HopeLine support domestic violence programs there are a few ways to participate. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and you can take action by going purple for Domestic Violence. Visit any Verizon store or go online to purchase exclusive purple accessories, like the LG Tone Pro™ Wireless Stereo Headset or select cases, and HopeLine from Verizon will donate $1, up to $100,000, to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
HopeLine Phone Donation Program:
You can also get involved by donating your old wireless phones, chargers, and accessories to your local Verizon store. This isn’t exclusive to Verizon phones. You can donate phones and accessories from any carrier! If you don’t know where to find your local Verizon store you can use the store locator to find stores in your area. I bet you have at least one nearby. Even though I live in a small town in Upstate, SC, I have 3 Verizon stores pretty close by, and I have plenty of old cell phones and accessories around here I’m ready to donate!
To date HopeLine has collected more than 11.4 million phones and donated more than 190,000 phones. Put those old phones to good use and support domestic violence prevention and awareness with a donation of your own.
