I love it when bloggers come together for a good cause. And I’m happy to take part in this one – an online fundraiser for Women at Risk. This is a group that helps women in Ethiopia who need a way out of prostitution.
The number of women prostitutes in the capital of Ethiopia is astounding – about 150,000. Of those women, about 74% are HIV positive. These statistics show how great the need is for any type of help. Women at Risk provides both Rehabilitation programs and Prevention programs to change these numbers. And they are making a huge dent in this area.
The Rehab program lasts one year to help make positive changes in the women and teenagers lives. After all, many have been raped, were forced into selling their bodies by family or just plain monetary need, and may not know a way out. Women at Risk have a high success rate of getting women out of prostitution, teaching them new ways to earn money and knowing that they deserve a good life. Over 90% of the women are living a new life away from prostitution.
After reading their mission statement and values I can see why Women at Risk is so successful.
Love, accept and reach out to urban women in prostitution with a view to building community through relationships and improving their quality of life and challenging civil society about the issues they face through effective prevention and education programs.
Some of their values include:
- Unconditional Love
- Justice and Advocacy
- Openness to Change
Can you imagine how a young women who sells her body for a meager amount of money must feel knowing that someone cares about them and wants them to be happy? It must be shocking and take time for them to know they can trust again.
