I received book as a gift from my daughter since I’m going to be a grandma soon, very soon. Funny, You Don’t Look Like A Grandmother is a humorous and touching look life of the modern Glam-Ma, Gram, Nana, you name it. Actually you grandchild will name you no matter what you want to be called.
The role of being a grandmother has changed with the times. The author, Lois Wyse portrays this with stories of her life as a grandmother and those of her friends. Some stories are funny, some so touching, you’ll be tearing up. Written in short story form, this is an easy and quick read.
Similar to an etiquette book for the new grandmother, Wyse writes about situations she has been through and how she handled them. After having eight grandchildren, I guess she can be considered an expert in the field. Her examples are not advice, but suggestions, and with the added touch of humor, this lighthearted look at the role of a grandmother has its teachable moments.
Some of us will be the grandmother we had as children because that’s what we’re used to. Others of us will be completely different because of our lifestyle. Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Grandmother, helped me realize that whatever type of grandma you are is perfectly fine as long as you love your grandchildren. Our society is used to varying lifestyles. And if your daughter or son is used to the way you live your life, there’s really no need to change it when your grandson or granddaughter comes along. The only thing to do is be there when you’re needed. Don’t give unwanted advice. And spoil that child! After all, you don’t have to deal with the consequences.
I read through this book as soon I got it. I really did laugh out loud and get emotional at times. And I thumb through it as I’m here with my daughter and son-in-law as we wait for my grandson to be born.
Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Grandmother makes a great gift for new grandmothers. Buy a few copies to give out as soon as you hear the news from one of your friends.
