Fall Family Activities and Foods with Together Counts

Fall family activities are one of the goals of Together Counts. This program focuses on families and schools becoming healthy through “energy balance”. The calories you eat can be lessened by the activity you take part in. Focus on a healthy active lifestyle and reap the benefits.

Together CountsIn Florida we don’t have a real fall season, but in the area where I live the temperature does drop a bit. The mornings and evenings especially become cooler. More families get out of their air conditioned homes and get active. We find pumpkins, acorn squash, apple cider, parsnips, gourds, and pears in the produce section of grocery stores. Some leaves do fall from trees but they aren’t colorful. Farmers markets open. Football season begins. Halloween preparation begins.

Some of my family’s favorite fall activities:

  • Walks in the evenings when the sun is going down. We see our neighbors and talk with them. It’s as if people are coming out of hibernation.
  • Setting up our bird feeders and keeping them filled with food is something we do during the fall as birds begin to arrive in Florida after migrating from the south.
  • Bike riding – my husband and daughter do this together
  • Decorating for Halloween – We like to decorate so children come to trick-or-treat at our house.
  • Gathering Pine Cones – We use these for holiday crafts.

Some of my family’s favorite fall foods:

  • Chili – Either made from ground turkey or beef with kidney beans and eaten with shredded cheese
  • Roasted Pumpkin Seeds – We save them after the pumpkin is carved. I wash them off, salt them and place them in the oven to roast.
  • Candy Apples – I used to make these but we buy them ready made now.
  • Apples and Pears – We dip them in melted chocolate
  • Zucchini Pie – I need to make this more often
  • Apple Pie – Who doesn’t like apple pie? We like to eat it a la mode with vanilla ice cream

My family likes to spend time together. We play together and eat together. I learned from Together Counts that “Children that share family meals together are more likely to maintain a healthy weight.” And it’s more important to focus on moderation instead “good food vs. bad food”. They also provide tips and tools for families for energy balance, eating together and being active together.

Together Counts is a unique program that “brings together more than 200 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations.”
