Oxfam America has planned World Food Day for October 16th. The goal is to think about where our food comes from and the work involved in growing grains, vegetables, fruits, etc. And the main focus is to remember that people are hungry worldwide.
When I sit down to eat I usually look forward to tasting and to enjoying the food prepared. Our family dinners are a time to talk about the day and to have a good time. Sometimes I’m concerned about the cost of the groceries I used to make my meal, the dinner tab at a restaurant or the calories I’m consuming. But I don’t worry about where my or my family’s next meal is coming from.
I don’t need to farm my land, be sure that my cattle are properly fed and watered or take my children out of school to help me get the food I need. Those that have live this daily know that working hard doesn’t mean they will have the food they need for themselves and for their family. “..Nearly 1 billion of us still go to bed hungry—not because there isn’t enough, but because of deep imbalances of opportunity and resources. Today, crises and disasters, rising prices, and failing production threaten to push hundreds of millions more people back into hunger.”
On World Food Day, you can host a dinner that uses the GROW method and that allows time for discussion about how to make the world’s food system fair to everyone. The GROW system by Oxfam is made up of five principals:
- Reducing Food Waste
- Buying Products that Safeguard Fair Deals
- Cooking Smart
- Buying Food in Season
- Eating more Fruit and Vegetables
