As so many moms know you lose focus on yourself when you have child. As much as I love my tween and adult daughters, the word “mother” became my identity no matter what else I did. I thought as my children grew time I would have more time to focus on me. No way!
So as a mother, how do you focus on you?
Take Time For Yourself
Every day make some time for yourself. It can be 15 minutes when you get started. Increase the time as much as you can. Ask others to help you. If you are married sharing the responsibility of rearing a child should be part of your plan. If you are a single mother, consider bartering babysitting time.
- Pamper yourself – take a bubble bath
- Read a portion of a book
- Meditate
- Watch a trashy TV show
- Take a class and learn something new
Take Part in a Hobby – if you’ve given up on a hobby that interests you start it up again. Find something new – see what your friends are doing or check out the meetup website.
Take Care of You – Keep your hair appointments, get your nails done and buy yourself some new clothes. If you’re concerned about money, go to a beauty school, shop at thrift stores or consignment shops.
Change Your Mindset – I’ve learned the hard way that if momma is sick she can’t take care of her babies. Sometimes you have to put yourself first even if we think is being selfish. When you are feeling run down and overwhelmed, ask for help. Reach out to family and friends. Sometimes you have to say, “No” to requests from the PTA, your worship center, whatever type of volunteer work you take part in. And don’t forget the above tips.
Take Care of Your Relationship – You are your significant other must nurture your relationship. Go out to dinner, take a walk, and go on trips alone. Make a date night for each week.
What are some of the ways that you take care of YOU?
Because some of you who are reading don’t know me, I must clarify that I love my children. By no means am I complaining about raising them. In fact it is a privilege. This is just a normal situation that many mothers find us in.

Such a great reminder. My husband and I have a weekly date night that we adhere to pretty religiously. It really does make all the difference. On my best days I get up early (before everyone else wakes up) and go running. I haven’t had many of those “best days” lately, but looking forward to starting up again now that school’s started and we’re back in a routine.

The best way for me to focus on myself is to make sure I get enough sleep. I do not have nearly the same patience when i am tired versus when I have slept!

I am making time for myself each day to workout (also when I watch silly shows like General hospital or the real housewives of nyc)— and pampering myself occasionally to do things like get a massage or pedicure.

Couldn’t agree more! Sadly, though, I do get push back and negativity from my husband when I do these things for myself. I think that says ore about him than me. LOL
