If you care about children, you care about SNAP and the Farm Bill. And it takes just a few minutes to send a message to Congress not to cut the budgets of these programs that ensure children don’t go hungry. Every message counts!
Members of Congress are working to reauthorize the Farm Bill, legislation that provides funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program, formerly known as food stamps, and for the SNAP education program. Did you know that nearly half of all SNAP participants are children?
Please don’t judge people who receive help from SNAP. It can happen to anyone of us. Many of us are just a few weeks or months away from needing assistance even if we work, even if we’re married, even if we have some savings. Lose your job and try to pay your bills and you may find you and your children hungry.
Parents sacrifice for their children and want them to have more than they did growing up. The difficult economy, the lack of jobs and the high cost of living are hitting many. Sadly, as hard as they try parents cannot provide for their children. In this country, no child should go hungry.
It happened to me – a married woman with a husband who had a wanted baby. He chose to use drugs and to drink shortly after her birth until he couldn’t keep his job and until he became abusive. I had no choice but to leave him. He would not pay child support and even though I worked, I didn’t earn enough to provide shelter, healthcare and food for the two of us. Food stamps (SNAP) and Women Infants and Children (WIC) saved us.
