Children’s literacy is a passion of mine, ever since I realized that many children didn’t have the opportunities me and my daughters did when it came to books and reading. RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) is partnering with Macy’s to create Be Book Smart. And the Twitter Party on July 11th from 6 – 8 PM EST will provide information about this nationwide effort to give more free books to children who need it most.
I grew up surrounded by books and enjoyed trips to the library even before I started school. When I had my daughters, I did what my mother did and more. When I visited my daughter’s preschools the realization that children only saw and touched books there hit me hard. Was it because their parents didn’t know any better? Was it because they couldn’t afford to buy books or get to the library?
With RIF and Macy’s working together, Macy’s customers can take part in the Be Book Smart campaign. When a customer gives $3 for a book they will receive a coupon for $10 off a $50 purchase at any Macy’s through July 31, 2012. Learn more at rif.org/macys. Macy’s has been a big supporter of RIF since 2004, raising over $21 million to support children’s literacy.
