Shopping For Father’s Day

One of the most difficult holidays to shop for is Father’s Day. My husband never gives me a clue about what gift he wants from me. Not an inkling of an idea. It’s easy for my 13 year old daughter because she can make him something like a card or a drawing and he’s thrilled. Me – I have to brainstorm for weeks.

When I do buy him something, he’ll thank me graciously and act like he’s so happy. A few days later I’ll find my gift sitting on his dresser or still in the package. It’s the ShawnOnline Shopping sign that I won’t ever use this gift even if my life depended on it.

I read through blogs, look at Pinterest and ask friend for suggestions for the man who doesn’t want anything. Then I actually start browsing for a gift. Whenever possible, I use a coupon code to save money because he won’t let me return the unwanted gift. This way at least I’m saving money.

He likes all kinds of sports and collects sports cards and autographs. He loves Disney items. Anything related to the US Army or National Guard interests him. But, I can’t buy clothing or even a baseball cap. He has so many sports collectibles, that I might buy a double. You see where I’m going with this?

Lately, I’ve been buying gift cards and restaurant gift cards. Who do you think he spends them on? Not himself, of course. At least he uses them…. most of the time. Another thing that’s worked in the past is going shopping with him before Father’s Day and watching what he looks at or even buys for himself. Then when it’s closer to the big day, I take advantage of the Father’s Day Deals and buy his browsed item or one that’s similar to one he already bought.

Father's Day Breakfast

All I know is the pressure that comes along with Father’s Day shopping is just too much for me. Other holidays are bad enough, but this one day that focuses on him is stressful. Maybe I’ll make him breakfast in bed. I’d have to get up at the crack of dawn to get that done though. And I bet you he’ll say that he wanted his eggs scrambled instead of fried.

Boy, I still need to figure out what the kids and I are doing, too. We don’t tend to exchange much, but I do like to get a little something, along with a handmade gift from the kids. I need to get cracking!

You should focus on your daughter and what she can do for dad to take the stress off of you. Have her make him some dad-to-do coupons and a hand made card. Keep it fun and easy. Give him his favorite bag of candy or snack. Keep it easy!
