Facing My Fears

One day I will work on facing my fears. There’s too many to name, but just to give you an idea, I’m afraid of heights, going underwater, very loud noises (this is new, because I used to attend concerts as often as I could), and trying to speak a foreign language, even a few words. Some of my fears are based on events that have happened to me. Some I don’t understand myself. And some surround embarrassment.

As I go through life and make the most of it, I avoid circumstances that would cause me to face my fears. It can be easy or a very difficult task, especially when I’m traveling and wanting to try new things. I love the water – pools, the ocean, lakes, etc. but I’m on edge when I’m near it. It’s worse when other people are around because they may throw me in the water. And I miss out on so much! I dream of swimming in the ocean without the fear of waves knocking me down. I can picture myself jumping into a pool and the water covering my body.

I’ve said that I’m going to get help – take lessons with a swim coach who understands this type of fear. But, I make excuses and never do it. My older daughter learned to swim on her own, but Sammi takes after me. What example am I setting for her?

Characters In Flight Balloon Ride at Disney World

When I see the Characters In Flight balloon ride at Walt Disney World, I think about facing my fears. I’d love to take a ride high over the resort. One day I’ll take that leap of faith and surprise myself!

What type of fears do you have? Have you faced any of them?

  1. I have many fears..and one of them is fire.. however I have to get around it or else there will be no food as cooking cannot be done.. I guess the best way is just to go and do it.. and the fear of it will lessen

  2. I have a fear of flying. I’ve flown my whole life and then a couple weeks before 9/11 I flew with my kids and had a panic attack. So, I haven’t flown since then. The thought of it sends me into hyperventilation! Other than that, I guess i don’t have any fears…much. Other than the “normal” stuff…spiders. Haven’t done a thing to get over my fear of flying. Maybe something that would knock me out during the flight?

    • Mimi, my husband has a fear of flying too. He has flown though because of a death in our family. Since then he’s flown to Hawaii, which takes forever. I bet if you talk to a doctor about your fear, there’s some medication that can help you. I sure hope so. I’d hate for you to miss out on traveling and getting somewhere quickly.

  3. I always thought that I would never even in a million years want to take a hot air balloon ride as I’ve had a fear of heights for as long as I can remember but lately, I’ve been thinking that to see the world from the basket of a balloon would be pretty darned cool. Granted, I’m not sure if I’d feel the same way once I got up that high but I’d like to try it someday!

  4. Oh, I’m with you. I’m afraid of man made heights. Pitching myself for work. A lot of things… I need to go journal a list now and possibly share later.

  5. I am deathly afraid of spiders. I always hated them, but really became terrified when I hit one w a shoe & had the babies all scatter in my kitchen. My fear has gotten so bad that last yr I broke my sunglasses on a ride bc fake spiders dropped in front of me & a huge one spit water at me. It doesn’t matter the size. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. I do think we transfer our fears onto our kids though, bc naturally they will follow us. Luckily neither of mine are scared of spiders. Good luck Connie! I know you can do it!!

    • Isn’t it something how we can remember with such clarity when something makes us scared? Those are the kind of things I want to forget. Thanks for the luck, Kim. I’m going to keep trying.
