Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 18 -24) focuses on keeping children of all ages safe while in motor vehicles. The National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHSTA) wants to increase awareness of the proper use of child seats, booster seats and seat belts to help prevent the thousands of children who are tragically injured and killed in motor vehicle crashes each year.
Here are some recommendations that parents and caregivers should be aware of regarding children riding in cars and other motor vehicles:
- Purchase the correct car seat or booster seat based on the age and size of your child. Also know which seat fits in your vehicle.
- Learn when to change the position of a car seat from rear facing to forward facing and when to move to a booster seat and to a seat belt.
- Learn the proper use of your car seat or booster seat.
- Register car seats and booster seats to be kept aware of recalls.
- Learn the proper way to use a seat belt.
- Learn the laws in your state about children in motor vehicles.
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Crashes are the leading cause of death for children between the age of 3 to 14.
- An estimated 8,959 lives were saved by child restraints from 1975 to 2008.
Today, September 24th was designated National Seat Check Inspection. I did learn that inspections are held throughout the year though to a lesser extent. You can find an Inspection Location by state and zip code.

What an informational and great post, Connie. I was in YOVASO/SADD in high school, so I know all too well how horrifying crashes can be. Thank you for spreading the word and keeping others safe.

Putting a proper seat belt in place and being knowledgeable about everything that concerns child passenger safety is every parent or guardian’s responsibility. Every child has the right to be protected. There’s no excuse.
