I’ve never been one to concern myself about eating healthy. When I was young, I was so thin that I could eat anything and not gain an ounce. In fact, my doctor wanted me to eat high calorie foods to try to gain weight. I didn’t have any health problems, but I’d get weak and lightheaded if I felt hungry. So, keeping my stomach full was my way of staying healthy.
I was considered extremely underweight as a child and teen. I never reached 100 pounds until I became pregnant with my first daughter. Even after I gave birth, I lost all of the weight I gained during the pregnancy quickly. I got that weak feeling again and had to eat small meals during the day, with no regard to what type of food I was eating.
Around the age of 30, I did put on some weight, but was still thin. When I became pregnant and gave birth to my second daughter, the weight didn’t come off as easily, but by then I was about average weight. When I turned 40, I was diagnosed with a serious chronic illness, then others. Soon after, I lost so much weight that I was told to drink protein shakes and eat whatever I wanted to gain weight. After years of eating anything, without thought to calories became a habit. Because my husband and daughter are both thin, there’s all kinds of high calorie foods and snacks that I love in the house. It’s easy to eat a bowl of ice cream, snack on cookies, or not concern myself with portion control.
But I have to make changes and stop this habit now! I am in the overweight range and have multiple chronic illnesses including Arthritis. Putting extra weight on my joints isn’t a good idea. Losing weight will help me move better, ease some of the pain I feel every day and give me more strength and energy. I am working on healthy eating with Marie Callender’s Under 500 Calorie Meals.
Back in November, my daughter was diagnosed with medical problems. I want to be there for her emotionally and physically. We’ve had to take her to doctors and ER visits. I’ve had to pick her up from school and other places at the drop of a hat. If being healthy for her doesn’t make me want to eat better, I don’t know what will.
