Because people run red lights, safety cameras save lives. I’ve seen red light runners myself and have been scared to death. I wait and look when the light turns green, just to be sure that no one is running a red light. Imagine doing everything right, being sure your car is running well, wearing your seat belt and following the traffic laws when a stranger runs a red light and runs into your car.
A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that 113,000 people were injured and 676 were killed in crashes that involved red-light running in 2009 – two-thirds of the victims were pedestrians, bicyclists and occupants of vehicles hit by the red-light runners.
Imagine the horror of someone you love being hit, injured or killed by a stranger running a red light.
Red-light safety cameras helped save more than 150 lives in 14 of the biggest U.S. cities from 2004 to 2008. Had the cameras been operating in all 99 U.S. cities with populations more than 200,000, more than 800 lives could have been saved.

I have been there myself. Not being able to respond quickly enough to à traffic situation and suddenly you are involved in an accident. Nothing serious but nonetheless dangerous situations. Good post!

I wish they had this for stop signs. I have one near my house that everyone does a rolling stop (if they even stop) for.
What a great reminder! I’ve been taught that we shouldn’t call them accidents because an accident is something that can’t be avoided. However, most of the time, they can be avoided with some caution/attention. Wonderful post.
I like the idea of red light cameras. I wish we had more of them, though I know they are expensive.
happened to me. i was turning left and my light had just turned green. the oncoming car on my left OBVIOUSLY had a red but didnt see it or decided to run it. He hit me on the driver’s side. Totaled my Volvo but all I suffered was a pinched nerve and one broken bone (and some bruises). We need those lights. I dont think they had anythiing like that 10 years ago?

My Mom and Step Dad were hit by a guy that ran a red light. Totaled their truck but thankfully neither of them were seriously hurt. This happens so much that I too wait and look before I go when my light turns green.
I agree on this. It is crazy that we have to keep making up new inventions to get people to just follow the basic rules of driving. If it saves lives, then yes let us use it. Thanks for sharing. Kelli
