I’ve been down in the dumps because I’m questioning my own parenting skills. There’s been so much happening with our daughter that I feel like my decisions are often wrong.
Keep in mind that my daughter has been diagnosed with Sinus Tachycardia, Narcolepsy, Anxiety and Depression. She has panic attacks (they are not related to the tachycardia). She is not doing well in school for the first time ever. She doesn’t want to socialize with other children outside of school. She’s easily upset by noises, by a change in schedule, by the need to bring a new supply to school, etc.
We are getting help from various doctors and her school. In fact she just started her 504 program (which upset her) and we’ve requested an evaluation for an IEP.
Here’s some of the things I go through during my week -
The psychiatrist asks me why I’ve stopped her counseling sessions. – Well she absent from school so often that I’m trying my best to limit her appointments.
My family asks me why she’s home and not in school. – You didn’t see her going through a panic attack in the morning when it was time to leave for school. You also didn’t try to physically get her out of bed when she insists she’s not going for whatever reason.
I get her updates on her grades online and find that she’s failed another test or didn’t get something handed in on time. – I go through her planner, backpack and binder every day, but something seems to slip through.
Things are really getting tough here. Soon we’ll find out if she can return to the same middle school next year because she’s not zoned for the one she’s in now. The principal told me that he makes his decision based on conduct and attendance. He only wants “stellar students”. If I was a betting woman…..

{{{HUGS}}} I honestly understand this feeling Connie. Hang in there. Please make sure you find some resources to help you as a parent, particularly a support group. Start with nami.org and work your way towards state, then local. With school please make sure you document everything which may come in very helpful down the road.
I’m always here if you need me. {{{{HUGS}}}}

Parenting is the hardest thing anyone will ever do, whether it is done alone, in a couple, or even in a village. Every child is different and will have different needs, emotions, reactions, you name it. We do the best we can; that is all that can be expected.
Have you considered homeschooling for a period of time to help her during this adjustment phase? I never homeschooled, but can see the value in it. Either way, you’re doing fine regardless of how things may seem in this moment.
Motherhood is just so hard! I wish I could come give you a hug, it sounds like you could use one. You are a good mother and you are doing the best you know how for your daughter. I haven’t dealt with this specific situation, so I don’t want to give any advice, but hang in there and know that your daughter will one day thank you for all that you do for her!

Connie, I seriously have gone through something very similar with my daughter her freshman year. If you ever need to talk let me know, I am here. My daughter spent six days in the hospital and they didn’t know what was going on but it sounds very similar to what you went through.
