Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving is a campaign that needs to be publicized especially during the holiday season. Last year, more than 250 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday periods according to the Ad Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
I’m happy to share the information about how to prevent Buzzed Driving again. Of course, don’t drink and drive is the tag line we have all heard, but it’s worth hearing again and again. If you are the host of a holiday party, don’t drink and watch out for your guests. You can take their car keys when they arrive so you have more control if their drinking gets too heavy. Drive them home yourself, call them cabs, or provide a place in your home for them to sleep. You can also have non-alcoholic drinks on hand for your guests who want to have something in their hand while they are enjoying the party. There’s a list of 50 virgin drink recipes available on Facebook that look and taste like the real thing.
If you’re out partying for the holidays at a nightclub, bar or restaurant, sober and safe ride programs are available. Most public places that serve alcohol are aware of these programs, but take the time to get the information yourself. You can even keep it with your car keys so that it can help trigger your brain when you see the note in case someone isn’t looking out for you. I recently learned about the American Automobile Association and Budweiser teaming up to provide a free tow and ride so that you will have your car at home for the next day. You don’t have to be a AAA member to use this service. Just visit the AAA website and enter your zip code for more information.
Have a Designated Driver when you go out this holiday season. Take turns so this responsibility doesn’t fall on one person all the time. Be sure to have a plan in place before you get into the position of thinking that you can drive because you’re just buzzed. Remember, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving this holiday season and always.
