Random Acts of Wellness Walgreens Flu Shot Cards Giveaway

I am taking part in the Random Acts of Wellness campaign with 9 other bloggers and giving away five Walgreens Flu Shot Gift Cards. My Random Acts of Wellness are complete. I gave my pediatrician five gift cards to present to parents of children who have serious medical conditions and can’t afford to get the flu shot on their own.

My Random Acts Of Wellness Completed

Our doctor was surprised and grateful for this gift. He and his staff are narrowing down who needs these gift cards the most. Unfortunately, there are many parents who fall into this category. His office provides flu shots for children as well as the Nasal-Spray Flu Vaccine (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine [LAIV]) (FluMist®). There are many categories of people who should not get the nasal-spray flu vaccine LAIV (FluMist®) though.

Flu Shot Information

You can learn about this year’s Flu Shot, by visiting the Walgreen’s site devoted to information about the Flu FAQs. And here is some important info that everyone needs to know:

  • The CDC recommends everyone over the age of 6 months and older get the flu shot this year.
  • Categories of people who at high risk for complications from the flu are children younger than 5 and especially younger than 2, adults over 65, people of all ages who have medical conditions such as asthma, cancer, diabetes, etc.
  • If you are live with, care for, or have contact with someone under 6 months of age, over the age of 65 or someone with a medical condition, you should get the flu vaccine.
  • There are people with certain medical conditions who should not get a flu shot. If you have a medical condition, speak to your doctor first.
  • This year’s flu vaccine includes the the H1N1 vaccine, so there’s no need to get 2 separate shots.

You can also learn more about the flu vaccine by visiting Walgreen’s Facebook page, where questions are answered, facts are provided and videos are shown.

Children With Medical Conditions

My focus on this Random Acts of Wellness campaign is to consider children with medical conditions when deciding if you are going to get the flu shot. Remember that children under 6 months of age cannot get the flu shot. There are babies that young who have chronic medical conditions. There are also children over that age who may be unable to be vaccinated because they are too sick at the time, their immune system may be too low, or they are allergic to eggs (a component of the vaccine) etc. Please don’t put them at risk! Even if you feel that you can handle the flu, think of others, especially children.

  1. Wash your hands regularly. Not obsessively. Aim for ~ 5-7 times per day… especially after touching doorknobs, other people, or surfaces that have frequent contact with others.

We wash hands regularly and also use hand sanitizer. We cough into the inside of our elbow instead of our hands to keep from spreading our own germs to others.
