No Lockers In Middle School – Back To School

My daughter had to get used to a lot of new things in middle school including carrying around a heavy backpack because there’s no lockers. Well let’s rephrase that. There are lockers but the students are not allowed to use them, maybe. Parents have complained that with all of the supplies the students have to carry, up to 5 binders, notebooks, folders and some text books as well as gym shoes and lunch boxes, there tweens and teens have backaches at the end of the day.

They are not allowed to use rolling backpacks, not that I think any tween or teen would even consider such a fashion faux pas! The staff at my daughter’s school are deciding whether to open up the lockers for the students. My daughter said it looks good. She’s seen them being cleaned out – a good sign. As a very thin girl, she’s overly thrilled with this idea.

Thinking that she would have a locker, she practiced using a Wordlock over the summer. Practice isn’t a good description though, as the Wordlock uses a combination of letters instead of numbers, making it easy to remember. She changed her mind at least a dozen times over the 5 letter words she would use. The Wordlock is made of  hardened steel so it’s secure. You can change your word by just moving the dials and using a coin in the end slot to save your new combination. Available in red, silver, black and pink.

Sammi chose red and is looking forward to having a locker to relieve her back and to show off her unique lock too. She is thinking about changing her word combination again! After all there are over 100,000 word combinations! That’s a lesson in itself.

You can find Wordlock at Amazon.com, Target, Kmart, Sears and other retailers. The price on Amazon.com is $9.43

I was in middle school we had lockers, but we were only allowed to use them to store our book bags and extra supplies. We were required to carry our books, notebooks, and everything we would need for the entire day with us all day because we weren’t allowed to have book bags in the class rooms, and we weren’t given locker breaks. We could only visit our lockers at the beginning and ending of each day.

My mom took me to the doctor numerous times due to back pains related to carrying my load of heavy books up and down stairs all day, and even though many parents complained it never did any good.

It’s still that way today in the same school, and the excuse is still that students can hide things like knives in their backpacks. The way I see it, they have metal detectors at the doors now, so students should be allowed to use their book bags and the they should be allowed locker breaks so they don’t have to carry everything all day long.

Oops, there should be a “When” at the beginning of my little rant there!

What’s the point of having lockers in the school if the students aren’t allowed to use them? That seems a little crazy.
