Day One – Disney Social Media Moms Celebration

I wrote up a short post about my first day at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration recently, but it didn’t have much detail. Since I have more time and energy, I wanted to fill in the missing links.

Although I thanked them on Twitter, I want to say thank you here to @leannej @lauraspencerone @momtalkradio @mombloggersclub @resourcefulmom and @5minutesformom for the wonderful opportunity provided to me and to my family through the conference. I was able to experience Walt Disney World in a way I haven’t before, even though I’ve been there hundreds of times before. Meeting with other bloggers and listening to speakers that inspired me was the icing on the cake.

Since we live about 90 miles from Disney World, we were able to pack up the car and drive on over.  We chose to stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge since we’re DVC members and have annual passes. Next time, I think we’ll stay at the main hotel where the attendees are at so I can be in the middle of things and meet more people.

After checking in, we took in the sights of the savanna right outside our hotel room window and then unpacked. We wanted to get to ESPN World Wide of Sports for the first event early, so we drove over. My daughter Sammi got to play some basketball and meet some other children there while I went to the Milk House to learn about new upcoming events for Disney.

I felt like I was part of the press in the Milk House. After all this was a media event being covered by local TV channels, newspapers and big Disney bloggers and I was in the midst of it all. So exciting! Seeing and hearing from Meg Crofton, President of Walt Disney World Resorts, Al Weiss, Pres. of World Wide Operations and Sr. Vice President of Disney Sports Ken Potrock had me in awe. The topic was What’s New, What’s Next.

For Walt Disney World, there will be Summer Nightastic, with different parks taking part. The most exciting announcement for me is that the Main Street Electrical Parade will be back, but better than before, with new floats including Tinker  Bell! There will be new fireworks and the Sounds Like Summer concerts will be brought back too.

I’ve known about the big addition to the Magic Kingdom, but hearing about the details live, got me wishing it were open already. The new Princess Land will open later this year and include a special place for each princess where guests can take part in activities such as dancing with Cinderella. The famous Dumbo ride is in for major updates. The queue will comprise of  carnival games and the ride itself will double in size.

For Disney Cruise Line there be a new ship in 2011, the Disney Dream with virtual port holes that show the ocean and Disney characters. If that didn’t get me to buy tickets right then and there, the AcquaDuck ride had me breathless. I got to see it in virtual action on screen as it whips around the ship, part water slide, part roller coaster. Castaway Cay will be upgraded too. I can’t imagine anything better than the private island that is owned by Disney, but imagine private cabanas, a new teen center and a larger family beach area.

ESPN World Wide of Sports will have a grand opening to showcase it’s 220 acres multi-sports complex that features 60 different sports annually. This complex is open to youth sports, endurance running and even Atlanta Braves spring training. The special magic of Disney and the professionalism of ESPN combined makes this a place to take part in the sport of your choice and feel like you made it to the big time.

After the presentation, I met Valerie Gray @valmg and her family on the way over to have dinner. The dinner was Tailgate style and the place was jamming with music, great food and lots of friendly people. We got there late so we ate upstairs but then headed down so Sammi could dance the night away.

The Disney Cast Members were on their toes, taking care of each of us. They made sure we had a place to sit, food we liked, our tables were cleaned off and our questions answered. They made our first day at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration so special. Our thanks to you all! On our way out of the complex, we each got a brand new ESPN Wide World Of Sport cap which we all wore back to the hotel with pride.

Although tickets for the conference were purchased, I and my family received meals, park tickets, etc. at a great discount. We also received gifts, opportunities to attend events not open to the general public and to take part in contests to win prizes all from the Disney Company. I was not asked to write about my experience or share the information.
