Disney World And The Thunderbirds

What do the Thunderbirds and Disney have in common? While we are at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World on April 7th, 2008 we got to see the connection.

The night before we got a message on our hotel phone. It was an odd message stating that there would be some loud noises the next day and not to be concerned or worried about them. Disney was aware of this. Of course this is nothing close to the way the message sounded but you get the gist.

Walt_Disney_World_ThunderbirdsWe decided to visit the Magic Kingdom the next day and had forgotten about this mysterious phone message. We were in front of Cinderella’s Castle when we began to see CM’s (Cast Members) coming to the area in droves. Shawn and Samantha ignored them and went on their way. Me, being the curious one, asked what was going on. I was told that the Thunderbirds would be doing a few flyovers within the next half hour or so.

I grabbed my family and told them excitedly that we needed to stay put. We had to explain to Peanut what the Blue Angels were even though she had seen them as a toddler. She didn’t think it was a big deal, until they flew over the Castle and Main Street not a few times but about 8 times. It was heart pounding exciting. It made us feel so proud to be Americans. Their mastery of flying was awe inspiring. It was very difficult to take photos due to their speed but I did the best I could. I hope that this brings you a bit of joy today.

Yes dreams do come true at Disney World. I’ve witnessed so many times, but seeing the Thunderbirds fly over Disney is one of my all time favorites.

    Those shots were great! I don’t think I’ve ever seen them live [I would remember such a thing, wouldn't I?]. I have seen air shows before and have heard them fly overhead on their way to somewhere. Talk about loud!

    Of course, all I keep reading about on blogs is Disney. It’s been a long time for me. I think it’s been 6 years now. And to think, when my family moved to WPB in 1978 until my senior year in high school [1989] I went to Disney at least once per year [sometimes more]. {sigh}

    My Dad was asked years ago when he was in the Air Force to fly with the Thunderbirds as one of their mechanics but he declined as he didn’t want to leave my mom alone all the time with four kids to raise while he got to travel around the world and country with them. I was always very proud of the fact that they asked him to begin with as I know they choose only the best and my Dad was one of THE best aircraft mechanics in the Air Force. Makes a girl proud!

    Seeing them in flight is just truly amazing and gives one goosebumps, doesn’t it??

    Cool photos. I was in the Air Force so I’m a little more partial to the Thunder Birds, but anytime I see our planes in the sky it is a very cool day indeed. It’s amazing to see what the best pilots in any of our armed forces can do.

    Linda – I can’t believe he turned that down. I’m not sure I could have done that, but it’s nice to see that his love was as deep for his family as it was for his country.

    FLY HIGH!
