December Birthday

A December birthday is easily forgotten in the mix of holiday cheer, the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas, shopping, decorating, spending money, saving money, so on and so on. My daughter Samantha was supposed to be born on December 31st, but was actually born on December 17th.

That year we were prepared. I wasn’t working and we were much younger. My daughter Alicia was still at home and was so excited about having a sister that she was ready to do anything to help us get ready for her arrival. So our home was decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving. Christmas cards were mailed soon after. Gifts were bought, wrapped and put under the tree by the first week of December and the nursery was ready even earlier.

Samantha surprised everyone but me. I knew the day I woke up that she was going to be born soon. And I was right. So Samantha had her first Christmas when she was just a 8 days old. She was adorable of course and our hundreds of photos prove it.

December birthdays are fine when your child is very young, but as they get older, their parties are put off until January or February. They get gift cards or checks for presents from family. Everyone but the birthday girl is exhausted. The celebration is quick and it’s back to getting ready for Christmas. Poor December babies.

Whatever you do don’t give the December birthday girl (or guy) a card that says Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday …. blah, in the trash can it will go soon after you’re out of sight LOL

My sister was born Dec 7th. Poor baby. Not only right at Christmas but on Pearl Harbor Day. I have always felt sorry for her that she never seems to get a special day for herself LOL

I remember when my husband and I were trying to conceive – I was adamant that we stay the heck away from each other the month of March because I did NOT want a December baby, for this exact reason. However, my two SILs have December babies and they seem to work it all out – although it does make December that much more hectic, with the birthday parties thrown into the mix.

My kids’ father’s birthday was 12/8. We made a point of recognizing it as special regardless of the month. [No Combo Gifts!] Our tradition was [and still is] to make the birthday guy/gal their choice of birthday dinner. My mother started this after we all grew up.

Now, my brother-in-law’s birthday is 12/24, so that is a little harder. I usually bake him a cake since we spend Christmas Eve together. And I had a friend whose birthday is 12/23 and then she got married on 12/18 – talk about a glutton for punishment! :)

My Aunt Mary’s birthday was Christmas Day, too, so she always seemed to get cheated a bit. My friend Carol has her birthday on the 23rd and her family is always very good about giving her a special birthday party just for her and not combine it with a Christmas party. It’s a tricky balance!

I can empathize with Samantha. My birthday is Christmas day. It’s always a challenge to get people to celebrate my birthday, but it’s great to have them around for Christmas :-)
