My 10 year old daughter was just in school for a week when on Sunday she got sick, really sick. She woke up with a 102 degree fever, she was coughing, sneezing and felt really sleepy. She had a sore throat and a headache. Normally I’d give her something to reduce the fever and let her sleep, but with Swine Flu going on I decided to call the doctor.
We were told to watch her fever and if we had difficulty waking her or she couldn’t stay awake, to take her to the hospital. If not, call for an appointment in the morning. Since she had all the symptoms of the ful minus body aches (she may have, but we didn’t ask her about them) it was assumed that she had H1N1.
By Tuesday, she wasn’t getting any better, so her doctor decided to have her tested. What happens is that you are actually tested for the flu. If that comes back positive, then that swab is tested for H1N1. My husband Shawn took her to the lab to get tested and we waited. We were told by the Health Department that it was 99% likely that she had the Swine Flu due to her symptoms. So we waited some more.
About noon on Wednesday we got a call from the pediatrician’s office that the test was negative! I can’t describe how happy we were. I know that it is very unlikely for complications in children with Swine Flu, but when it’s your child, you don’t think that way. It was scary. I guess no matter what we are told, when it happens, our maternal instincts kick in and logic goes out the window. I feel sorry for pediatricians right now.

Oh how scary! I would have been scared also, even though I have heard all the statistics. Is she feeling any better now?

I’m so glad your daughter doesn’t have swine flu! Hope she’s feeling better!
I am so glad she didn’t have swine flu. I am afraid that there will be more and more of it as school gets underway everywhere and people are in close contact. I hope she is feeling much better now!
I’m so sorry to hear peanut was sick, but glad it wasn’t the Swine Flu. Before school ended up north this year my friend’s son had it. The last week of school, in June. Luckily he got on TamiFlu right away and his case wasn’t severe. I think this is going to be a bad year with flu. I am happy your daughter is doing better and will pray you all stay that way!
