Perseverance Book Review And Giveaway
August 25th, 2009 by Connie Roberts*CONTEST ENDED. WINNER ANNOUNCED.*
I was a bit concerned that reading a book about young people who have cancer would be depressing, but I was totally wrong. Perseverance by Carolyn Rubenstein inspired me and helped me to think differently about my life. Learning how people who were still in the process of believing that nothing bad could happen to them, then getting a diagnosis of cancer and living through treatments that hurt body and mind, coped could only make me cheer them on, not cry for them.
And that is what Carolyn Rubenstein wants to accomplish with her book – share with us their hope and inspiration. At the age of 14, Carolyn volunteered at a camp for children with cancer. Because of that, she founded a non-profit called Carolyn’s Compasionate Children (CCC) which first connected children with cancer with pen pals who didn’t have cancer and now provides college scholarships for young people diagnosed with cancer. CCC still exists. Ms. Rubenstein’s book is an expansion of her work.
You’ll meet 20 college students who share in their own words, their experience with cancer and how they have learned that life is precious, that every moment is a gift, even the difficult ones, and that they are not heroes, instead they are able to use their positive thought process to cope. (Please don’t think that this is a blame those who don’t survive book, it’s not.) Ms. Ruvenstein adds to each story an introduction and a summary.
This is not only for people with cancer or life-threatening diseases. Anyone can learn from these stories. And believe me, you will.
Learn more about Carolyn Rubenstein and her beliefs about perseverance by visiting her website. You can also read her blog, A Beautiful Ripple Effect.

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

Hello there! I find this review very interesting and because of it, I intend to buy a copy asap — 1 for myself & another as a gift for my bestfriend. You see, she is a cancer survivor (was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer 2 years ago). She is a very positive individual, pre- and post-cancer. But, though I was & am still there for her, she really never let me “in” on her inner struggles during the time she was undergoing treatment. She did say, then, that she did not want me to feel sad for her. So I know she will appreciate this book. Thanks for the recommendation!

I read lots of them- actually all of them and I liked what Caleb Scoville had to say about who is the most inspiring person to you? He stated- Jesus- I am here and able to tell my story and any other reasoning you can think of because of him. He is the most inspirational and influential person in all history (to me)

Amanda Ramsdale is who I read about! I too consider Lance Armstrong a great inspiration! Who is the most inspirational person to you?
Lance Armstrong — he is a model for perseverance, strength, and accomplishment. His advocacy and concern for others is truly something that I try to emulate and draw inspiration from.
