I learned that art classes in my daughter’s school have been canceled for the next school year. This year Spanish classes were canceled. I am extremely upset and angry. The only “specials” they will have next year are music, community service and physical education.
Taking art away from elementary age children is a disgrace. Art is not about who can draw or paint the best, it is about being creative, learning to be confident about yourself and gaining social skills. There are studies about how art aids children in learning math, reading and other subjects. There is one example from the Manchester, CT Art Office.
Recently Mrs. Obama said, ” “My husband and I believe strongly that arts education is essential for building innovative thinkers who will be our nation’s leaders of tomorrow…” (from Keep Arts In Schools)
What do I plan on doing? I am going to speak to our principal first and then if needed go to the school board with my concerns. I will see if I can gather other parents that believe as I do – that art is necessary in school.

That makes me so sad. My kids LOVE art and I can’t imagine their education without it! And with the amount of taxes we pay, I’d be flaming PISSED if they did away with it.
I hope you’re able to find a way to bring art back – I think it’s a vital part of education.

Arts really are an important role in kids life. Kids express their feelings and behaviors through art. I guess the parents should gather together and talk to the principal.
