I had to do that with one of my old beds. I had a piece of thick plywood cut to fit over the planks and added a second mattress that I found at a 2nd hand kids consignment shop. I put it on the bottom in a zippered mattress cover on the bottom. He was thrilled and it lasted him until he got too big for the bed. Just a thought. Had the same problem w Hunter’s loft bed.
