My Sick House
April 29th, 2009 by Connie RobertsWe’re all on antibiotics so our friends are staying away. Everyone’s scared, but won’t admit it. I swear that we don’t have the Swine Flu!
Peanut has an infected gland that has one side of her face all swollen. She also has a sore throat and cough. I have a sore throat and swollen glands. Hubby has a sore throat and is sneezing. I guess our doctors realized that we’d just continue passing it to each other at this rate so they broke down and gave us prescriptions. Of course, Peanut needed one.
She’ll be home the rest of the week because I doubt that they want her coughing at school and showing up with a big lump on her face. We’re all getting on each other’s nerves because we’re all tired and feeling icky. But other than that, life is just grand. It gets even better when we hear the news about the Swine Flu.

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

Yeah this is the fun part about chronic illnesses – we not only get sick just like everybody else, but since our immune systems are probably weakened already, we get sicker faster, and suffer longer than most. Then if we have kids we get the unparalleled joy of the endless cycle of infection-illness-recovery-infection as we all progress through the illness’s cycle.
One time, several years back — this is no lie, and I swear it is true: I woke up on a Monday AM. Daughter was feverish with spots. “Oh lord,” I thought. “Chicken pox?” I took her to the pediatrician, though I wasn’t well myself. Doc said “not chicken pox” but by time the exam was over, I was incapable of driving. Had to get DH to send my brother to come pick me up. Got home – fever of 104. I had flu.
Next morning, elderly mom came to take me to doctor’s. In the waiting room, SHE passed out – cardiac arrhythmia. I couldn’t take her to ER – I’m contagious with flu. I stay at doctor’s office, get tamiflu.
Brother goes to hospital with Mom. While there, nurse sees brother’s hand – swollen up to twice its normal size. He’s got some kind of infection. HE gets admitted, along with Mom. DH comes to get me and take me home – whereupon the dog barfs all over the floor.
The phone rings. It’s my other brother, saying he’s coming down. “For the love of God and all that’s holy, man, stay away unless you’ve got one of those viral plague suits from the CDC,” DH told him.
True story. (We all recovered, eventually.)

Our house is full of sick too. My eldest daughter stayed home yesterday because of it and so did my husband. But OF COURSE my husband was so dramatic about it … because he’s a man. Don’t even get me started.
