The Paramedics and EMS in our county know my family too well by now. After having to call them for me years ago, then for Hubby after getting stung by wasps, it was my Aunt’s turn. Now that she is in a Nursing Home preparing for her second shoulder surgery we thought we’d have a break.
Just as we were sitting down to eat dinner last night, I got a call from my Mom that scared the heck out of me. All I could understand was, “Help me, help me.” When I tried to get her to tell me what was wrong, she mumbled something about fainting.
Hubby and I ran out of the house with our cells and jumped in his van. I called 911 as we sped to my mother’s house. It felt like it took forever to drive the 3 minutes to get to her house. It was pretty scary to go inside too. I didn’t know what to expect. But we found her in a chair, pretty much out of it, but her breathing was good. I asked the questions the 911 operator wanted me to relay, but my mother wasn’t able to answer that many questions.
By then the paramedics arrived. They checked her heart first, which was fine, thank God. Then her blood sugar, blood pressure, all OK. But she didn’t look good at all. They couldn’t even get an IV in her. We did learn that she vomited a lot and felt really sick to her stomach, had a bad stomach ache and that she felt dizzy and faint.
They took her to the hospital while we grabbed her things, got her cat in, and then followed. It was just a few hours where we learned that her Potassium was low and she most likely had a stomach virus. She was feeling much better after they gave her medicine to calm her stomach. She actually was sleeping most of the time. She stayed the night with us even though she was totally against it. By this morning she was raring to go home. Hubby drove her home, got her prescriptions some things for her clear liquid diet.
Thank goodness that it turned out this way. It could have been so much worse.

so glad that your mom is now ok.

Girl….. perhaps your family should consider buying a used ambulance truck. lol
You could use it for vacations, grocery shopping, camping, moving big stuff…. and the occasional emergency. keep smiling- i love your blog!
Wow, I’m glad it wasn’t more serious and that she’s feeling better.
I know exactly how you feel about being the best-known house on the EMS route. My mother went through a series of mishaps the year before she ultimately fell and broke her hip. Just two days prior to the big fall, she fell in her bathtub and couldn’t get out. She wasn’t hurt seriously in that one, thank God, but she called me first. I couldn’t get her out either! We were both laughing hysterically by the time I finally decided I had no choice but to call EMS. She said, “fine but at least get me a nightgown or something first!”
