I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

  • Exergen TemporalScanner Thermometer Review and Giveaway

March 26th, 2009 by Connie Roberts

*CONTEST ENDED. WINNER ANNOUNCED.*When my daughter is sick the last thing she wants is to be bothered with things like having her temperature taken. She is usually miserable and irritated. Who can blame her? I feel the same way. We were given an ear thermometer as a baby shower gift. I think we’ve used it about five times because it is so difficult to use and so uncomfortable for her.

exergentemporalscannerThe Exergen TemporalScanner is easy to use because all you need to do is slide the thermometer over the center of the forehead for just 2-3 seconds while holding down the scan button. When you hear beeping and see the red light flash you know it is working correctly. Release the scan button and you will see the temperature on the display.

    From the website:

The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.

The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment.

    My Review:
I only used this while my daughter was well (thank goodness) but it was very easy to use. The directions helped me understand the TemporalScanner inside and out and what to do if there are any problems. I tried it on myself and my husband too. So it works on adults too. That is important to me with my health problems. This is good for anyone who is sick often. It is well made and feels solid in my hand. Now that I own one I am going to put this on my baby shower gift list. No more ear thermometers for new moms!

diapers and wipes – can’t ever get enough of ‘em

    148. Doug Says:

Have made diaper cakes, for a long time, to take to office baby showers.

    149. Kelli Says:

Diapers, diapers and more diapers. They are so expensive. I tried to be the good mom and do cloth diapers, just didn’t work out for me so I say diapers are the best baby shower present you can give. Also go one size up when you give them at the shower because they are going to get (hopefully) size newborn or 1, so go to size 2 because they well need them quickly.

    151. Molly Capel Says:

You can’t go wrong with diapers!

    152. Mir Says:

For me the best shower gift is something that the mom would not have bought on her own but it turns out to be a lifesaver so this would vary from person to person. For me the perfect gift was the Boppy pillow – I wasn’t going to buy one (“I’ll use a regular pillow”, “Mothers have managed without one for centuries” etc.). I LOVE it and recommend to everyone.

    153. ky2here Says:

Cash or a gift card – let her decide what to buy.

    154. Gloria Dornin Says:

I love giving a ton of small things, bibs, washcloths, toys, blankets all in a diaper pail

    155. Angie O Says:

a set of rechargeable batteries. might sound corny, but its something i use every day!

A savings bond would be a useful gift as opposed to a tacky picture frame or something like that! Thanks for the entry!

    161. Jammie Says:

There are so many things that could be the perfect gift. Such as diapers and wipes. Also bath products for the little one and onesies a momma and daddy can not have to many of anything to be honest

    162. venus m. Says:

The perfect gift would be soft blankets, they can be used in so many ways!

    171. Penny F. Says:

Diapers is all our daughter asks for :) They are one of those items that are always needed and you can never have enough of.
      Thank you for this offer.

    172. Jennifer Short Says:

The best baby shower gift I ever gave was I bought a large collection of things I figured no one else would get — baby nail clippers, medicine measurers, etc. When I gave it to the expectant parents, the dad who is a nurse kept exclaiming over every item that they needed it and no one had thought to get them any of that!

    173. flared0ne Says:

Maybe I missed it, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned an obvious item — A “DiaperGenie” was one of the most useful items we acquired.

Although a key realization (which the vendor will hate to have bandied-about) is that you can use standard kitchen trashbags “just fine” without resorting to the expense of their “consumable item” (like ink being the actual economic driver for lowcost printers), i.e., the replacement packages of bagging plastic.

    174. Suzie G. Says:

My perfect baby shower gift is a three tiered diaper cake with onesies packed into it and a Bumbo Baby Seat wrapped up in the box as the fourth tier.

    175. Mollie G. Says:

I have to agree with most of the comments here — diapers, in bulk-discount-sized packages, will have the largest impact on a new mother’s budget, as much as anything because it frees up funds for those little things that warrant a certain joyful experience of being personally selected.

A perfect gift would be lots of cash to pay not only for the medical expenses, but also setting up a safe environment for the baby when the child comes home.

    191. Faith Says:

Seems to me that all children need nurturing and loving parents to provide a safe loving environment in which the child can grow, so loving parents would be a phenomenal gift.

This thermometer sure sounds like a perfect shower gift, maybe something no one else will think of, because it’s new. I also like a bundle of cotton diapers for burping, cleaning or whatever packaged with a gift certificate for whatever the new mom didn’t get at the shower.
