Curse of the Bone Pirates Book Review
January 4th, 2009 by Connie RobertsCurse of the Bone Pirates: Nui Island Eco-Logical Adventures is a book that takes place on a fictional island in the South Pacific Ocean. This action packed book serves a dual purpose, to entertain tweens and teens and to teach how to save the environment. My 10 year-old daughter, Peanut read this 30 chapter book in about 4 evenings.
She really enjoyed reading about the adventures Sam, Big B and Nalu had. She learned about different healthy foods that she has never eaten before, words from Spanish and Polynesian languages, science topics, like bacteria and the weather. She also liked the Nui website, where there are character bios, games, facts about the environment and a place to register for the website and win prizes too. The company behind the book makes Nui Hybrid beverage made of natural fruit juices. 50% of the beverage profits are donated to children’s health and environmental charities.
Here is Peanut’s review of the book:
Big B’s Grandpa, Professer Prune, was digging close to a volcano when a storm started. When the lightning struck and Professer Prune was knocked off the hill, he lost his memory. His speech became jumbled and that’s when Big B and his mom had to go to Nui Island. Sam had to meet them at the airport and Big B and Sam instantly did not get along.
I can easily relate to Nalu because I am really good with animals. There are a lot of chapters which makes me want to read even more. I love all the descriptions for the events that happened. The mystery of the odd pictures and letters really amazed me. Using the necklace to decode everything was really smart. Knowing Sam’s past “aubela” (very past grandmother) first had the Stone of Souls is interesting and exciting.
This is the type of book that can keep a child’s attention while teaching them important lessons that are needed for a lifetime.

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

I think this book may have been part of my youngest daughter’s book fair awhile back. She mentioned something about this kind of pirate book being offered.
Good to know it’s been well received!

My son’s too old for this book, but again you do the best reviews to help parents make library/buying decisions!
