I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.
School Chorus
October 9th, 2008 by Connie RobertsPeanut is in the school chorus. I’m so happy that she joined. She’s had a fear of getting up in front of public to do anything lately, even at our church, where she’s been since she was in my tummy. When she was little she had no problem singing, talking or doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing in front of the congregation.
But as she grew older, little by little she was afraid to be seen by everyone. First she didn’t want to go up on stage for VBS (Vacation Bible School) group songs. Then she didn’t want to be chosen to say the verses, even if she did it with other children, instead of on her own.
Now it’s at the point where she’ll go up for the children’s sermon but won’t answer a question there or even if she’s sitting during the service. When it was time for her to become a Communing member, our Pastor had to basically trick her into coming up front of everyone.
She is afraid to read out loud in school or to give a speech. She was so glad when her class didn’t have to introduce themselves when school started. I know how she feels as I was the same way, but in a group I was, and still am fine.
To know that she’s excited about being in the chorus and that she’s even going to sing at a community event, makes me very proud. It’s another sign that she is growing up right before my eyes.

That is great! I was also shy as a kid and being involved in the school music program really helped me out. It will be a great experience for her

I have a shy son who was also in a musical theatre group for awhile. It shocked me that he wanted to do it but it was so great for his self-confidence.

Way to go Peanut! I wouldn’t worry about this too much, everyone has different levels of comfort with this type of thing. My mom couldn’t keep me off the stage (I’m a huge HAM!) and my brothers and sisters were like your daughter. We all turned out just fine! I hope she enjoys chorus. She certainly has a great mom!

As a deaf child attending a public hearing school, this was one of my biggest fears. I didn’t have good speech during those years and it was horrible seeing the kids giggle and make faces when I had to speak out loud. I made up my mind that I was going to speak as clear as a hearing person can and over time and much speech therapy, I did eventually reach that goal. Many people tell me today I have very good speech and are surprised that I am deaf since I speak so well. Your daughter too will gain more confidence over time!
