• About

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

  • World Communion Sunday

October 6th, 2008 by Connie Roberts

Yesterday was World Communion Sunday. This celebration happens on the first Sunday of October each year. It began in 1936 by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was originally called World Wide Communion Sunday.

We celebrated it at my church DaySpring Church. We are actually a member of the PCA or Presbyterian Church of America. But this special day is recognized by many denominations. To explain the meaning behind this day, read the quote below from the National Council of Churches USA:

World Communion Sunday celebrated the first Sunday in October is one of the most venerable of special Sundays. The day has taken on new relevancy and depth of meaning in a world where globalization often has undermined peace and justice and in a time when fear divides the peoples of God’s earth. On this day we celebrate our oneness in Christ, the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are called to serve a world ever more in need of peacemaking.

Our sermon based on 1 Corinthians 12:12 – 26 which fit perfectly with World Communion Sunday. We learned about how we are one church, even though each of us is an individual. When one of us hurts the whole church hurts. We are to share good and bad times together, pray and lift each other up and to come together even in times of disagreements. I pray that my church can uphold Paul’s instructions.

Like Lorie above, I had never heard of World Communion Sunday. so this was very informative and interesting. I am a Catholic, so Communion has a very special meaning and impact in my beliefs. How wonderful that your church is promoting the idea of oneness in Christ for all of us! I think it is a wonderful thing and if we could all live up to it, the world would definitely be a better place. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot.
