<description>I would like to think that Barack Obama's candidacy is not based on his race but unfortunately the fact that he is a black man is brought up constantly by the media and everyone else. It shouldn't make one iota of difference what his race is and yet every single time I hear the words "first black man ever to be nominated" I cringe because that makes his race a big part of the equation.

I also sincerely hope that when people keep talking about Obama following in Martin Luther King's footsteps they think about the fact that King's footsteps were cut short because there were people who couldn't see the dream that he had and that, sadly, there are still some people in this country that feel the same way. We may like to think we've evolved as a society but there are still a lot of holdouts that are too prejudiced to see the forest for the trees. I hope that security is ultra-tight for Obama and his family because I would hate to see him follow King's footsteps too closely and suffer the same fate as that visionary did.
