I watched a little bit of Sundance Channel’s, “Runnin’ Down A Dream: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers”. Tom Petty’s music has been a part of my life for as long as he’s been around. I like his easy style of rock and roll, the bluesy feel of his music and his story telling. As his music grew and changed it felt as if it was following my path of maturity.

When the Traveling Wilburys came on the scene in 1988 the timing was perfect! Hearing Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne play some of the most inspired music of my lifetime I’d felt as if I’d found the perfect rock band. Well, I’m not sure if rock band is even a way to describe them. I remember sharing their music with my sister (who passed away at 33 years old of Leukemia). We’d call each other and talk about something we’d hear in one of their songs. We’d listen to that tape, yes it was cassettes back then, over and over.

Then Roy Orbison died. We really didn’t know much about him until the Traveling Wilburys. We had missed out on a lot of good music. It hit us hard. We knew there wouldn’t be any more music from that original group. I thought no one could replace him, the mix was too good. I still think I’m right. The mix of so many talented musicians having fun and making excellent music is hard to find.
