Growing up with a very patriotic father, I was taught the real reasons for holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. My father was a veteran of WWII and even though it took him years to be able to talk about his military service, he did share his love of the United States, the pride we should have in our military and veterans and the reverence we should have for disabled or deceased veterans.

Now that I am married to Hubby, who served our country for 17 years and is now medically retired, and with the Iraq War (oh wait, that war is over, silly me), my ideology has matured to the point of recognizing that we are in a second Vietnam War (Conflict), that our Iraq veterans who are made up of mainly a volunteer basis (National Guard) are being maimed instead of killed, and I’m not sure which is worse, and that our President got us into this war under false pretenses.

Don’t just think of Memorial Day as a day off or a day to party. Remember the sacrifices. The military, the casualties, the injured soldiers, medically and mentally, and their families still deserve our utmost respect. I know that times are tough financially but give a little to those non-profits that help their causes. When you see a man or woman in uniform, or a veteran, tell them thank you. Teach your children, blog about, write to your congressperson, senator and newspaper that this war needs to end now. And watch this video:
