Bloggers Unite – Stop Sex Slavery
I learned about sex slaves and human trafficking from watching a documentary on TV a while back. More recently, Natalie Grant, a Contemporary Christian music singer has spoken about this issue and has helped bring it to the forefront for many people.
She and her husband visited India and saw some terrible things that caused her to become an advocate for women and children held in sexual slavery. She uses her celebrity status to teach how we can help prevent this atrocity. She also wants to spread the news that this occurs in the United States and in other countries that we may travel to such as Australia and Thailand. According to World Vision, the US makes up 25% of the citizens who travel to other countries as “sex tourists”.
Here are some statistics from Fair Fund:
- 70% of all victims of trafficking are trafficked for sexual purposes
- 80% of all victims are women
- 50% of all victims are youth and children
- 200,000 to 350,000 American girls and boys are at risk of being exploited for sexual purposes
- 20,000 individuals are trafficked INTO the United States each year
The reasons for human trafficking are as varied as the victims and their circumstances. Some are lured into the sex trade because they must pay back a debt of being brought to a new country. Some are sold by their families. Some are lured by false job ads, so-called friends or boyfriends, mail order bride magazines, etc. All are victims. Some are as young as 12 years old and live in cages. All are suffering.

~International Organization For Adolescents (IOFA) Project Prepare! provides assistance to youth in orphanages who are transitioning into adulthood. They provide job and life skills with an emphasis on protecting themselves from human trafficking.
~Generation Aware focuses on Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This program provides staff to train community leaders as referrals for anyone who felt threatened by human traffickers.
Things like this are reasons for “wrath of God.” Humans are so evil… what goes ’round comes ’round.

Yes, the world is full of treachery, evil, meanness, greed. But it’s also full of people like us, people who respond to Bloggers Unite. We are the hope of the future. We are the ones saying, “YOU CANNOT CONTINUE DOING THIS! WE SEE YOU AND WE WON’T ALLOW IT!”

That is just straight up cruelty and a complete violation of human rights. People who are associated with such trades really do not deserve to be in am amongest society. What they do not only destroys the lives of their captives but that of their families and also the people who chose to pay to have sex with these people (they are losing a big part of their soul).
I just don’t know how people can go to sleep at night knowing that they are imprisoning people and subjecting them to a life that is dangerous and detrimental to their health and well being.
I feel sick!!! But you do have to let stuff like this be known.

Great post and good links. I also wrote about modern slavery. I think it is absolutely deplorable that it still happens. In 2008. But I agree with Cathy that we can make a difference.

It’s great to see human rights getting coverage in the blogosphere.
Last summer Nelson Mandela brought a group of really dedicated individuals together – ex heads of state and Nobel laureates – to work on solving global issues. His hope for the new group, The Elders, is for them to “speak freely and boldly, working both publicly and behind the scenes on whatever actions need to be taken”. They’re working on topics ranging from the crisis in Zimbabwe to rising food costs and they want your help.
There are so many issues in dire need of attention right now, but human rights ties them all together. The Elders launched the Every Human Has Rights campaign to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and celebrate human rights as that common thread that weaves our struggles and our victories together.
We’re asking the blogosphere to take part. Would you be willing to add a link from your page to the Every Human Has Rights website? We also have badges and flash widgets so bloggers can show support for the campaign.
We’re trying to get as many people as possible to sign a personal pledge to uphold the principles of the Universal Declaration. We have action partners to help people get more involved.
