• About

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

  • Fighting Memories

March 26th, 2008 by Connie Roberts

One of my favorite memories of being with my Dad was watching boxing on TV. He was a fan of boxing since he was in the military. He got to see his first real boxing matches held during basic training as a draftee of WWII. He then followed his all of his adult years. As he aged, was sick and had trouble sleeping, he would watch boxing on TV in the early morning hours. I’d sometimes spend time with him in the late night sitting up with him and cheering as quietly as we could.

We’d also watch the big events like Mike Tyson, Floyd Paterson, Larry Holmes and many of the other widely known boxers. We’d enjoy these events like people enjoy Super Bowl, with snacks and lots of jeering out loud to the TV.

My Dad was fortunate enough to go to a live boxing match but I never have. The closest I got was to see a Pay Per View match at a skating rink on a movie screen. That was back in the days of not having cable.

I know that my Dad would be excited about the upcoming rematch of Mayweather and De La Hoya. It is scheduled for September 12th or 20th. The bout has not been finalized yet but there are many people excited to see these two fighters have a go for it again.

The last time they fought, in May of 2007, it was the largest grossing box office boxing event. Floyd Mayweather was the winner then in a split decision. There was a lot of wheeling and dealing before that last bout. A television special was made about the two fighters preparing and it included Mayweather’s estranged father attempting to act as De La Hoya’s trainer. This did not pan out but made for some exciting pre-boxing promotion.

Although the date and venue haven’t been determined, this fight is bound to be just as thrilling as last year’s. Expect a lot of trash talking, surprises and maybe even some good boxing in the ring. As soon as they go on sale you can purchase your Mayweather/De La Hoya tickets and get in on the action yourself.
