• About

I’m a wife and mom of two daughters. My daughters are 12 years apart so that keeps me quite busy and a little crazy at times. My life is a jumble of mixed up mishaps, but it’s always centered around my family.

  • No Pearls For Me

March 21st, 2008 by Connie Roberts

The world would be my oyster if instead of pearls oysters would would make Disney pins. At Disney World, there’s a stand where you buy a certain amount of oysters and see if there’s a pearl inside. Peanut’s new collection is pins. They get pretty expensive and it would be nice to be able to open oysters (for free, hey this is my dream so why not?) and get a brand new pin for her.

Oysters are a favorite food among many people, me included. They’re also good for you because they have Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which people take in pill form called Fish Oil. This is often used for arthritis, brain fog and dry eyes. They also contain Vitamin B-12. I get B-12 shots every two weeks to help me with my fatigue.

With eating oysters you do have to be aware of some risks. You can get a bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus from eating raw or undercooked oysters. Gulf oysters can prevent this risk because they only sell post-harvest oysters. So you can enjoy the taste of a raw oyster without the fear of getting sick.

Even people who are at risk like me, because I have a weakened immune system because of the medications I take can eat Gulf Oysters. Other people who are at risk include those who have any form of liver disease, diabetes, cancer, iron overload disease and stomach disorders. Before doing so please check with your doctor to be sure that this is safe for you.

I would be thrilled if my doctor tells me it’s OK to eat raw oysters. I’d go out and buy myself a dozen, some cocktail sauce, lemon and crackers and have myself a feast!

I never realized Oysters were good for you. I haven’t tried them since I was a teenager – I didn’t like the taste back then. But now, I’m constantly looking for nutritious and healthy food – taste doesn’t matter as much to me as staying fit.

I’ll be looking into oyster recipes now. Thanks!
