We’ve lost so much of our patriotism in the US. Most of the national holidays that should mean something to us are looked upon as a day off from work or school, a day to spend with family or a day to go shopping and save money.
President’s Day is a great example of this. Preschoolers and Elementary School aged children learn about the meaning of this holiday, but we adults often forget. This day used to be the day in which we honor President Washington. It was celebrated on his birthday, February 22nd until 1971 when it was switched to the third Monday in February under the Uniform Holiday Act.
Large stores and advertisers then added President Lincoln into this holiday since his birthday falls in February too. So as many people feel that Valentines Day is a holiday “created” by stores to promote their sales the same can be said about Presidents Day. Do we really celebrate the presidents and their accomplishments? I can’t remember ever doing that.
But we look for sales in the newspaper, scour the internet for bargains hoping to find some way to save money. Maybe we’ll find an online sale or Dick’s Sporting Goods coupons. We often use this holiday as an excuse to shop. I know I will. Peanut is growing like a weed and needs new clothes.

Do you remember after 9/11 there were flags everywhere. Where are those flags today? This post made me think of that.
