Re-Gifting or Returning

Now that our Christmas decorations are finally down and the gifts have been gone through from under the tree comes the time to decide if some of the gifts need to be returned or re-gifted.

We need to return three of Peanut’s gifts – a dress, a Disney Princess chair and a book. The dress is too small (gosh Mom what were you thinking when you bought that?). The chair is too small (gosh Dad what were you thinking?). And the book is one she already owns.

The re-gifting is for Hubby’s gifts that he got from some of his customers. We could tell one of them was already re-gifted. It was a coffee mug with a cocoa mix. The box was all messed up. We decided to just keep it. Another one was an ugly candle that everyone thought was chocolate candy. I still have no idea what it’s supposed to be. That we’re keeping as an “in case gift”.

As we went through the gifts we realized that there are lots of things that need batteries. I had bought some inexpensive batteries at the one of the dollar type stores. Hubby asked me why I did that because the kind of battery is a lithium battery. He’s going to buy a package of them so we have them on hand.

Well, some returns and then more money to spend. What can you do?

Sending someone a re-gifted gift is kind of an insult, don’t ya think? It’s like saying “hey, this gift wasn’t good enough for us, but it’s good enough for you. It’s not like you’re worth a brand new gift.”

I do not make a regular habit of re-gifting but, on certain occasions I do. One example is, my husband gets gift cards from work and most of them are for seafood restaurant’s, I am highly allergic to seafood so we can’t use them. These I do re-gift. I think that it all comes down to what it is and who you are planning on re-gifting it to.
When I buy gifts for other people, if I am the least little bit unsure of if the person will like it or not. I include a “gift receipt.” This is really good when you buy books. Otherwise just give a gift card to Boarders of something. Then there is always eBay for getting rid of unwanted gifts =)

I have no problem with re-gifting. We have an unspoken rule in our family. If you get something that you can’t use or don’t like, save it for when you find someone who you know will like it. I won’t re-gift something to someone that I know they’re not going to like, but I do re-gift.

Like this year for Christmas hubby got a wallet from my Grandma. It’s a tri-fold, and he only uses bi-fold, so I re-gifted it to a friend of ours who was complaining about needing a new wallet.

Just don’t ever re-gift back to the person who gave it to you in the first place. lol My aunt did that to me a few years ago. Luckily it was something I almost kept for myself in the first place!

I don’t look at re-gifting as an insult. It’s making use of something that we can’t make use of. It’s going Green!
