Chronically Ill At Church

I help run a support group at my church for people with chronic illnesses. Our new Pastor has been very responsive to the needs of members and visitors with chronic illness. He’s understanding and wants to learn more about how to accommodate people that have serious health issues.

He and his wife share the belief in Luke 14: 1-14. The most important verse being – verse 10

“But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.”

In other words, in our church people who are disabled in any way, have any kind of health problems are given the seats in the front of our church. We actually have a small pew where two wheelchairs can fit on either side. It’s the second pew from the front. No more having wheelchairs stick out in the aisles or in the back!

Another thing that will be implemented is that our services will be copied to CD’s so that when someone isn’t well enough to come to a service the CD can be provided to them. We’re in the process of building a website that will include information and possibly videos of our services.

Our Chronic Illness ministry will have a place on that website. We will also be promoting it in doctor and other medical offices.

I’d love to hear about how your church provides for people with health problems.
