Surgery is Over and Mom Can Sleep

Peanut was a champ this morning. We had to give her the full dose of Valium as the half of a pill did nothing last night. She chewed it (yuck!) and took a tiny sip of water with it. Within 10 minutes I found her on the couch moaning because she wanted to go to bed. She was clearly out of it. She fell asleep after some coaxing from me. Then Hubby bundled her up and put her in the van. She slept through the ride to the Oral Surgeon’s office.

When we got there we ended up having to wait because in our haste to be there on time we were actually early. The office was closed. But at our exact arrival time we saw the door being unlocked. Hubby carried Peanut in who was still sleeping.

I told the receptionist that we were there and that their patient was asleep. We ended up having to wait about 20 minutes to be taken in to the room. Poor Hubby’s arm was hurting but we knew it was best to keep Peanut asleep. But our plans didn’t turn out that way.

The minute he set her in the dentist chair, she woke up a bit. Then when she realized where she was she started to cry so she woke up even more. Darn! Our plan of having her asleep so she wouldn’t feel the IV was ruined.

We were allowed to stay in the room with her while they got her set up for the IV. Both Hubby and I talked to her, stroked her hair, kissed her and told her how brave she was. When it came time for the IV we made sure we kept her head turned towards us. She cried from the needle but it really wasn’t too bad. Both Hubby and I were teary eyed but the nurse explained that she wouldn’t remember anything.

We had to leave before they gave her the anesthesia in the IV. To see her in that big chair was too much for me. I ended up crying.

The office staff calmed me down by going over the whole thing with me again. It helped to hear them say the same things the doctor, nurse and other nurse said. What a dork I am! But that’s part of being a mom.

The procedure was done in about 30 minutes but it took a while for Peanut to wake up. They didn’t want us to go in the room seeing her too groggy so we waited for the nurse to call us in. When we went in Peanut was crying and again I got upset. The nurse explained that since she cried while getting the anesthesia she would cry off and on for a few hours. My poor baby! She was trying to talk but it was hard to understand with the gauze in her mouth and part of her face numbed.

We were told that the baby tooth that had to be removed was in more deeply than was seen on the x-rays. The dentist had to cut the tooth in four places to remove it. He decided to numb that side of her mouth to reduce the pain. She may have some bruising too. We also were told to go ahead and get the prescribed pain medicine as they felt she may need it.

The good news is that Peanut doesn’t remember much of anything concerning the surgery. She kept thinking it was tomorrow. She did cry for about two hours on and off but then went into a sound sleep for about four hours. She hasn’t needed the prescription pain medicine, as we tried Motrin and that worked for her.

She’s still sleepy and a bit groggy, even now as I write this. She just got another dose of Motrin and she’s feeling OK. She’s been hungry so we’ve been giving her the cold liquid diet today and she’s eaten everything. If you know Peanut, that in itself is a miracle!

I even got to sleep today while she slept. Hubby sat in the den while Peanut and I slept in our bed. It was a good deep sleep. I plan on another night of good sleep tonight.

There are a lot of places where a person can get cosmetic surgery; these places are growing more every day. While if we talk about restylane Texas is very famous for large number to clinics. Among the different cosmetic surgery procedures thermage is very common and effective one.

Just reading this caused my eyes to well up with tears as I recalled when I had to take Jamie in for a tonsillectomy and the trouble she had taking the medicine to calm her down before they put the IV in. Jamie has always been horrible at swallowing pills and she had a terrible time and was crying and such. Nothing pains a mom more than seeing your child in pain or scared and I felt so bad that she had to go through the formalities before a surgery that was really very necessary. She had strep throat several times a year and the doctor said that her tonsils were blocking three-quarters of her throat. Like mother like daughter I guess as I had the same problem with my own tonsils though they didn’t come out until I was 22. Ouch!

Anyhow, all babbling aside, I just wanted to say that I know how you felt and that I don’t think you were being a dork at all. You were being a mom and that’s how we moms react sometimes! So glad to hear that everything seems to be going well now and I hope that Peanut continues on a quick and as pain-free recovery as possible!

I’m glad everything went well. We, mothers, always worry and get emotional when something happens to our kids, it’s our nature, it’s normal. I hope she gets well real soon.

My dd is almost 4 and I also hope she won’t remember a thing about her surgery. My son did it at the age of 3 and doesn’t remember.

EMLA cream can be used on the IV site to numb it before you even go in… saran wrap or a big bandaid can keep it in place…

It’s so hard to be the grown up, isn’t i!?? Ugh. I think the hardest thing I ever did was make MY OWN appointment to have my wisdom teeth pulled. I was in my 30s and was in tears! LOL
