I’m Not Imagining It
I went to my rheumatologist today for my 3 month visit. He asked me how I’ve been feeling. I said that I was tired and weak but I said it was probably due to the increased stress in my life. Sometimes my doctor gives me quizzes. Today was one of those days.
When I answered him, he rolled over on his chair with my chart in his hand. When he got next to me, he flipped through a few papers. When he got to my lab results he showed them to me. He’d circled something. Without my glasses on it was a blur.
My Potassium level is a bit low. Now for healthy people that can cause some fatigue, some muscle cramps, but not really anything serious unless of course it’s very low. For me, that makes the Myasthenia Gravis go out of whack, making my muscles weaker than they normally are. And cramps! I’ve been waking up to charlie horses every morning. Just chalked it up to another pain to cope with.
So boys and girls, don’t let your symptoms just sit there. Think about them with an open mind. Don’t play doctor (OK you can play the fun kind) and think you know your disease(s) so well you’ve got it all figured out. Call and let the doctor do his or her job.
I’m taking OTC Potassium and seeing how it goes. If I don’t start feeling better in a week, I’ll call for a prescription.

This was a good reminder to me not to try and diagnose myself all the time. We may not realize it’s something more serious. Thanks for the good advice!!

I experienced similar problems with the Charlie Horse cramps in my legs. My physical therapist told me about taking potassium for my leg cramps. Also, orange juice is another good source along with eating bananas.
Haven’t had those serious leg cramps since I started taking in more potassium. Thanks for reminding us to check with our doctors!
