Chronic Illness College Program

DePaul University has many different programs for people who want to get a college degree. They are located in Chicago and named after St. Vincent de Paul. They offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Some of the schools at DePaul are the College of Commerce, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Public Service, the School of Music and others.

The School for New Learning has online programs as well as programs on their campuses in Chicago. This School focuses on individualized learning for adults. One of their programs is the Chronic Illness Initiative (CII). The CII provides quality education to people with illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, etc. This is not a program for people with Learning Disabilities.

To assist students who may require hospitalizations during their studies, or have flare ups which may impair them from completing assignments, CII provides a Buddy Program, staff that are kept up to date on the CII policies, a yearly symposium on Chronic Illness and maintaining a college caseload, the ability to attend school on campus with assistance from staff, no minimum requirements for the number of classes (except if there are minimums for Financial Aid) and the opportunity for Distance Education (online classes).

DePaul University and it’s CII should be applauded for it’s forward thinking.

What a wonderful idea. Just the fact they even mention Chronic Fatigue Syndrome makes it finally feel accepted. I have wanted to finish college many times, but my CFS and Fibromyalgia have always reared their ugly head when I tried. Not enough energy. Thanks for letting us know about this. I’ll be checking into it.
