School Meeting

Tonight I attended a meeting at Peanut’s school. It was for the FCAT test. That is the standardized test that certain grade levels must take in Florida. And in certain grades if children do not pass this one time test they are not promoted.

Peanut does very well in school but has test anxiety. I can relate. From what I’ve learned tonight this test is quite draining on all students who take it. It’s an all day test with a great deal of reading. We were given ideas such as making sure your child gets a good night sleep before the day of the test and eats a protein filled breakfast.

All I can say is Hah! There’s a joke in there somewhere but I’m too upset to find it right now. Peanut doesn’t sleep the night before any test and her breakfast consists of maybe a half of a corn muffin or a half a bowl of cereal.

FCAT isn’t until March so we have time to work on her anxiety. It should help that when she took the practice test she scored the highest in her class. Will she remember that the night before the real test? I’m praying she will.

I always did rather well with tests, but as a teacher, I learned how difficult it is for so many students. I’d venture to say about 1/3 of every class has anxiety issues and another 1/3 has attention issues. Needless to say, I am NOT a huge fan of standardized testing. Whoever came up with the idea should be drawn and quartered!

My hubby is going to be in your neck of the woods this weekend. He’s visiting his mother in Longwood, FL. I have no idea where that is, though.
